Chapter 4: The Mysterious Hero in Cosium

--

.:Present POV:.

Suddenly, a knock on the door that interrupted the story-telling. The door was opened and it revealed it was Trails the three-tailed wolf. "Hey, guys!" he greeted.

"Trails, what brings you here?" Darren asked.

"My apology, Lord Darren. But the king just ordered me to accompany you and the guests, in case" he chuckled a bit, "…you know what I mean." Trails replied with a slight smirk on his face.

Apparently, Kaze afraid that his young brother would tell his sons and their friends something-not-good story. Darren sighed at this, "Fine, be my guest. Just sit wherever you want."

"Gladly." Trails bowed slightly and sat beside Team Chaos.

"So, are we continuing the romantic story?" Trails asked.

Everyone stared at him, then Trails scoffed, "You do realize that I'm not ACTUALLY tell the King and Queen, ya know?"

Darren smirked at his son, "You rascal."

"That makes us even." The triple-tailed wolf replied with a frown.

"Now, where was I, again?" Darren asked.

Then, the elder ebony hedgehog had an idea. "You know what? Why don't we have the entire story back to life?"

Everyone gasped except Trails, Trails then said, "Ahh, you mean the "Mist Teller"."

Mist Teller, hence the name "mist", it had the ability to transfer the message from the owner's mind and words. Which made it easier than using the words and mouth. Darren took out a patch of shiny dusks and made a sandy circle , with a small spell cast on it. Poof! A colorful mist came from the dust circle, and the color would change based on the words to match the atmosphere.

"Wow!" Cream exclaimed, admiring the beautiful color.

"Anyone wants popcorn?" Tails offered.

Of course everyone did as Tails took out his quick popcorn machine in his pocket. It didn't take him a long time to make everyone a bowl of popcorn. Darren sweat-dropped at this, thinking as if this place a theatre to them or not.

He waved his hands as the story continued, with images created in the mist...

--

Ten years later since the Wrath of Magic War, things had changed. Since the King of Cosium had died and the heirs weren't in legal age to take the throne, so it would be under Rakar's, King Mortesen's young brother, control. He took over the kingdom and it was in chaos. He made the people paid the taxes and took their properties if they didn't. The citizen would starve to death if this policy continued…

--

One day, there was soldiers were threatening the villagers in a small village not so far away from the kingdom. The villagers pleaded for their mercifulness and wished don't take their properties as their only living tools. Of course, bad guys always did the bad things. They took them away nevertheless.

Just then, a masked horseman rode above them!!

"It's Karok!"

The mysterious horseman climbed off his horse and drew off his sword, signing for a swordfight. The soldiers stared preoccupied on the masked hedgehog. The hedgehog wore in black, and yet full of majesty in him. (A/N: :Like Zorro.)

"That's legendary hero Karok, the "Devil of the Wind", who rob the rich and help the poor!"

"Good gentlemen!" Karok declared at the soldiers, "Why waste your time on stealing your people's money and properties?"

"Look, rascal!" One of the soldiers shouted, "Why don't you take off your stupid costume and run off like a twerp?"

Despite Karok was wearing the eye mask, he frowned. "Or…." He then drew out his other sword, swinging his twin-swords. "We could do this the easy way, or the hard way."

The soldiers all drew out their own sword and ready for the upcoming battle. "I guess that would be the hard way."

In a mere second, the troops were charging at the masked hedgehog. Although, the hedgehog was strangely calm as he read their mind what they would do for their next attack.

Karok chuckled, "Haha! I guess it wouldn't hurt to have some fun."

"Get him!!" One of the soldiers yelled, followed by the others.

10 soldiers against one hedgehog, basically there was no chance for the masked hedgehog to win. But when all 10 soldiers simultaneously threw their swords toward Karok, who was standing still calmly. In a mere second, the masked hero deflected the swords with ease, as a child's play to him. The soldiers were astonished by the power of the hedgehog.

Karok rose up his head and smirked, "My turn."

With that, he swung his hand and a strong gust of wind pushed the soldiers against the trees. Seeing that as a chance, Karok threw numerous of daggers stab their clothing that stuck on the trees.

Afterward, Karok gave the stolen properties and the items to the villagers. The villagers were grateful of their hero's generosity for standing up for them. They wanted to give him something as a reward but he declined. He returned them with a smile and glared at the soldiers who were still stuck on the trees.

Suddenly, he heard gallops from the south as the backup soldiers have arrived! Karok whistled out loud as his mystical partner appeared from the forest. It was an enormous horse, with wings hidden beneath its thick fur, it was masked as Karok was. The masked hedgehog rode on it immediately and shouted.

"Until we meet, ma kala (good-day)."

The leader of the soldiers, who had just freed from "Well, what are you waiting for? Charge!"

"But my lord, he is heading the forbidden forest. Whoever goes in, whom never return in one piece. It's a forest of demons and devil."

"He's the messenger of the devil."

"Who is this mysterious hero?"

"Is he really a hero? Or a demon from Hell?"

Meanwhile, back to Karok who was still galloping forward in the forest. When he saw no one was following, he pulled his horse as a sign to stop. He jumped off his ride and stood beside a small pond.

"Hmph, those idiots! They never stand a chance against me!" the masked hero mocked. He took off his musketeer hat for a moment to feel the breeze that gently stroked his head. He felt relaxed at the soft wind.

Slowly, he always removed his eye mask, as it revealed himself...Kaze!

His horse replied with a hmph, Kaze chuckled a bit at his partner. He patted gently its neck, "Heh, you got that right, pal."

Kaze stared at the sky and sighed sadly, "Years went by, and I've turned to 16. Mother has already been nagging me to get married. To be honest, I'm too young to get married and how can I marry someone who I don't love?" he sighed again, "Spedso, what should I do?"

His horse, Spedso, thought a while, but then it ran into a small shore of the river and signaled his partner the end of the river. Kaze stared at the direction that the horse stared, a moment later, the azure hedgehog grinned and petted his horse.

"You always know what I need." The horse happily responded. Kaze always loved the river, especially when it was in peaceful state.

Kaze gazed at their destination, "Maybe 'she' can answer my questions…"

He gave Spedso a slight whip and it slowly galloped on the surface of the water. Spedso is a special horse that could gallop not only the ground, but the water as well and ran as fast as Kaze, for their hearts were one. Kaze sang thoughtfully while they were heading to their destination.

What I love most about rivers is

You can't step in the same river twice

The water's always changing, always flowing

But people, I guess, can't live like that

We all must pay a price

To be safe, we lose our chance of ever knowing

What's around the riverbend

Waiting just around the riverbend

The horseman and the horse soon reached the river with small waterfalls, they ran forward with the water splashing around and got themselves wet, but they loved it.

I look once more Just around the riverbend

Beyond the shore Where the gulls fly free

Don't know what for

What I dream the day might send Jut around the riverbend

For me

Coming for me

I feel it there beyond those trees

Or right behind these waterfalls

Can I ignore that sound of distant drumming

For a handsome sturdy husband

Who builds handsome sturdy walls

And never dreams that something might be coming?

Just around the riverbend

Just around the riverbend

I look once more

Just around the riverbend

Beyond the shore

Somewhere past the sea

Don't know what for ...

Why do all my dreams extend Just around the riverbend?

Just around the riverbend ...

Suddenly, Kaze paused when he and his partner approached to the river that divided into two paths. One was straight and peaceful, and the other was narrow and unsettled. Kaze was hesitated.

Should I choose the smoothest course

Steady as the beating drum?

Should I follow my mother's will?

Is all my dreaming at an end?

Or do you still wait for me, Dream Giver

Just around the riverbend?

Silently, he chose the peaceful path of the river. After 10 minutes, he had reached to a small waterfall, with an old willow tree stood proudly beside it. Though it was a small place, the view was pure and spectacular.

Kaze climbed off Spedso and shouted in the air, "Grandmother Lake! Come on out now! You're not getting any younger!"

Suddenly an unusual wind blew off his hat, "HEY!" Kaze cried.

"Hehehe…" A female hedgehog but as a spirit figure showed herself in front of the mystery heroic hedgehog. She playfully took his hat.

"Haha." Kaze sarcastically said, "Very funny."

Then, Kaze stared at the peaceful river and muttered, "It's been ten years already…"

"And you're getting a lot handsome than you used to be. You used to be such a cute little baby when I first time saw you!!"

"I'm GROWING, Grandmother Lake. Of course I will grow older. And then…"

"You have to get married."

"I'm 16, and mother has already searched the Princesses from all over the place to be my bride. I will be crowned afterward. But… I don't want it."

"You still confuse what you choose might lead you to a wrong path, right?"

"It's not that I disagree with mother. But why can't she let me go out and find someone. And then fall madly in love!? It's not hard to ask." Kaze grumbled.

The azure hedgehog sighed deeply, he rubbed his temples to ease his stress. "What should I do, Grandmother Lake? Should I follow my mother's will? Or to chase my own freedom and happiness?"

Then, he heard chuckle from the spirit, who was playing with the water. "Your father asked me the exact same question about it."

The word that mention his beloved father had drawn Kaze's attention! He rushed to her side and asked anxiously, "He DID!? Then what did you say?"

Lake softly gazed at her god-grandson and replied. "I told him, "To listen with your heart". All around you, there are spirits, child. They are willing to guide you, if you listen..."

Kaze slowly closed his eyes and tried to relax a bit. He could feel the soft and gentle breeze in his spikes. A few moment later, he began to hear something...

Voice of the Wind: Ay ay ay ya Ay ay ya

"I hear the wind." Kaze replied.

"Yes, what is it telling you?" Grandmother Lake asked.

"I...I don't understand." Kaze admitted, not yet relaxed.

Grandmother Lake: Que que na-to-ra

You will understand

Listen with your heart

You will understand

Let it break upon you

Like a wave upon the sand

Suddenly, Kaze had finally heard it, "It says...something's coming! A parade!?"

Listen with your heart

You will understand

Voice of the Wind: You will understand ...

While Kaze was climbing the grand tree, he reached to the top. When he did, he saw what the wind told him, a parade was heading to Cosium!   Grandmother Lake followed behind him, she frowned at that. "Strange, I recall there is no celebration around this week."  Instinctively, Kaze's eyes widened. "The Princesses!" he groaned, "I am going to be late!! I'll see you later,

Grandmother Lake!" with that, he jumped on Spedso's back and rode back to the castle.  Although he didn't hear the words from the spirit before he left. "Good luck, my child... for there will be obstacles of darkness ahead you."

--  --Kingdom of Atlantis--

Meanwhile, below the earth, there was another world under the sea: Kingdom of Atlantis.  It had been ten years since that incident and the King sealed his only daughter's memory, things seemed to be peaceful and normal. Except today was the day to change the kingdoms of the land and sea forever...

A young female merhog was swimming towards the castle of the kingdom. She had a tail in emerald color, six spikes and a few pearls on her forehead. And not to mention her eyes liked the color of the sea. Her name was Sapphire, princess of Atlantis and daughter of King Posiden.  She swam along with her partner, Nana, a pink dolphin with complex tattoos on its body. Sapphire carefully avoided her people's sight because she was carrying a suspicious bag. She swam as she swam until she approached her room. When she reached her room, she told Nana to go back her hunt before someone sees her. The pink dolphin nodded as she swam away.

Sapphire spied the area of her room and the palace, in case someone spotted her. She sighed of relief as she swam towards her bed. Suddenly, she was greeted a matured voice.

"Where were you tonight?" Sapphire gasped as she turned her head where the voice from; it was her father, King Posiden.

"Da…Daddy!" Sapphire stammered, she was surprised after all. "I…I was…taking a swim around, that's all. Nothing's special!" the female merhog was nervous as she tried to hide the items behind her, hoping that would fool her father.

But her action showed everything as the elder merhog swam as lightning behind her and snatched the items she was hiding. Sapphire gasped again when her father took her things.

"Daddy! Please!!"

Inside the bag, was filled with stuff from the surface, basically they were found from the sunken ships. Sapphire saw her father's eyes slowly grew with rage. He began to scold at his daughter, "Care to explain what are THESE!!?"

Sapphire shuddered with fear, she had never seen him THIS angry before. "Uh…things from the sunken ships…" she muttered.

Though she didn't speak loud, Posiden could her clearly. "Sapphire!! You know those Coizards from the surface are no good! They are evil and cruel! And despite of that, you still seek their demonic items!?"

There was a short silence, the female merhog could only lowered her head in shame. "I'm sorry, father." She bowed her head a bit.

Posiden sighed at this, this time he spoke softly to his daughter. "Sapphire. You have to know I'm trying to protect you, keeping you from danger." With that, he gently embraced her. Ever since his queen died, he became overprotective toward his daughter, so Sapphire didn't have quite much freedom of herself as she was living a strict life.

After a while, Posiden kissed Sapphire's forehead and said goodnight, then he left her room, along her new found items. Sapphire sighed at it and threw herself on her bed, completely given into the softness of the spongy bed.

"Maybe he's right," Sapphire sadly said, "maybe there is something wrong with me. I just don't see how a world that makes such wonderful things," she gazed admiralty at the fork, "could be so bad…"

"If only I could make my father understands…" Sapphire muttered. Then she started to sing.

Look at this stuff, isn't it neat?

Wouldn't you think my collection's complete?

Wouldn't you think I'm the girl

The girl who has everything?

Look at this trove, treasures untold

How many wonders can one cavern hold?

Looking around here, you'd think

Sure, she's got everything

I've got gadgets and gizmos a-plenty

I've got who's-its and what's-its galore

You want thing-a-mabobs?

I've got twenty

But who cares? No big deal.

I want more

I wanna be where the people are

I wanna see, wanna see 'em dancing,'
walkin' around on those

Whaddya call 'em? Oh, feet

Flippin' your fins, you don't get too far

Legs are required for jumpin', dancin'

Strollin' along down the

What's that word again?

Street
Up where they walk

Up where they run

Up where they stay all day in the sun

Wanderin' free, wish I could be

Part of that world

What would I give if I could live

Outta these waters?

What would I pay to spend a day

Warm on the sand?

Betcha on land they understand

Bet they don't reprimand their daughters

Bright young women, sick of swimmin'

Ready to stand

And ready to know what the people know

Ask 'em my questions and get some answers

What's a fire, and why does it

What's the word? Burn

When's it my turn?

Wouldn't I love?

Love to explore that shore up above

Out of the sea, wish I could be

Part of that world

Sapphire sadly lied on her sponge bed again, then she got off and swam to her window and looked up the surface of the ocean, she saw the glimmering of the reflected sun. Sighing deeply and wishing desperately to be part of the surface world and walked under the warmth of the sun. Only one problem: Would that day ever come?

Only we know…on the next chapter of the story.
